The Challenge: A large project that started with the feature in the magazine (I was responsible for everything other than the intro) and then I took that content (and more) and converted it into a standalone booklet.
The Process/Solution: It was really a team effort--the art coordinator had selected quite a bit of imagery and we all filled in with anything we could find. That along with great assigned photography of the Wright Brothers Memorial really set the stage. The rest was coming up with a style, and the frame around the pages did a lot of the heavy lifting there, along with the fonts. One problem we expected from the beginning was that we would get less than optimal photography provided by the historians on the list. I developed the style for the treatment of those headshots with that in mind. I changed all of the photos to grayscale and added grain to help mask some of the lower quality images. The pop of color in the circle helped brighten them up as well.
At the bottom of the page is the entire standalone booklet where I took the same style/content (along with content from previous OS issues) and created a booklet.
